Photoshop Tips By David Helsdon
Sizing, Formatting, and Cropping for Output
  • From the menu choose Image -> Image Size -> adjust the size of one of the dimensions
  • Choose Layer -> New -> Layer from Background
  • Image -> Canvas Size -> adjust the size of the other dimension
  • Choose Tool -> Edit -> Free Transform (CTRL-T) -> then Move, Rotate, Resize or Distort the layer as desired
  • Flatten the image
Sizing and Formatting a 4x6 to a 8x10 Without Cropping
  • Image -> Image size -> change length to 10 inches
  • Tool bar -> Eyedropper tool -> select a colour from the picture (this will be your foreground colour) -> switch to background colour
  • Image -> Canvas size -> change the other dimension to 8 inches (This places the 7x10 image in the 8x10 frame and fills the space with the background colour)
Red Eye Correction (Before CS2)
  • Choose the Elliptical Marquis tool
  • Zoom in to the eye
  • Make a selection around the red pupil, slightly larger than the pupil
  • Select -> Feather Radius of 1
  • Layer -> New -> Layer via copy
  • Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation (or Ctrl +U) -> Edit: Reds -> Move the slider to the left to 290 to include more magenta
  • Reduce saturation and lightness to remove red eye
  • Remove excess overlap via eraser tool if necessary
Tone Correction With Curves
  • Layer -> New adjustment layer -> Curves (Making an adjustment layer rather than changing the image directly lets you:
    • Make more adjustments later
    • Reduce adjustments via layer opacity
    • Mask the layer to apply it only where you want it
    • Remove adjustment layer altogether
  • Flatten the image
